World of Warplanes — free-to-play MMO-экшен, посвященный золотой эпохе в истории боевой авиации. Разрабатывался компанией Wargaming.net совместно со стратегическим партнером Persha Studia (Украина). Идея о создании военно-воздушного ММО-экшена впервые возникла еще на ранних стадиях разработки World of Tanks. О том, что Wargaming работает над World of Warplanes, было объявлено в июне 2011 года. Компания сообщила о своих новых проектах во время выставок и поделилась планами о создании авиасимулятора в рамках трилогии на выставке Е3 в Лос-Анджелесе. На создание рабочего прототипа игры ушло два месяца, и в августе 2011 года стартовало закрытое альфа тестирование игры. В августе 2011 года на выставке Gamescom Wargaming продемонстрировала публике первый официальный трейлер World of Warplanes. В октябре 2011 года на московском гейм-шоу ИгроМир был организован закрытый показ альфа-версии игры для прессы. 23 февраля 2012 года компания Wargaming объявила о приглашении виртуальных пилотов в Глобальный альфа-тест World of Warplanes. 1 апреля 2012 года была опубликована новость о драконах в World of Warplanes. Разработчики вскоре признались, что это был розыгрыш. 30 мая 2012 года стартовало закрытое бета тестирование World of Warplanes. В течение первых трех месяцев разработчики получили более двух миллионов заявок на участие в ЗБТ. 4 апреля 2013 года, накануне начала открытого бета-теста, в игре было шесть боевых локаций и более 80 моделей самолетов из СССР, Германии, Японии и США. 12 ноября 2013 состоялся релиз русскоязычной версии World of Warplanes. В Европе и США игра вышла 13 ноября.
