About Microsoft Managed Apps
Microsoft Managed Apps is a first-party GitHub App that securely connects your repositories to Microsoft. Use it to power source-control–based workflows for Microsoft 365 Apps and Agents — sync code into builds, ship versioned releases, and automate deployments without leaving GitHub.
Short-lived installation tokens, repo-scoped permissions, and admin-controlled access keep your source under your governance.
Capabilities
• Source-driven app builds — Microsoft Managed Apps reads the commit you select and builds it through the Secure Action Service, with artifacts staged for deployment. • Versioning by commit — Every build, preview, and deploy is anchored to a specific GitHub commit, giving you reproducible release history backed by Git. • Automated deployments — Promote a commit to production; the App fetches the right source and connection references directly from your repository. • Branch and file operations — Read repo content and, where permitted, write commits and update branches as part of orchestrated lifecycle workflows.
Benefits
• Code stays in GitHub. Microsoft never mirrors your source into a separate store — builds pull from your repo on demand using short-lived installation tokens. • Least-privilege access. Permissions are scoped to the repositories your admins choose, and tokens are issued per-installation, per-request. • Admin-controlled. Your GitHub organization or repository administrator decides which repos are connected and what level of access is granted; revocation is one click.
Setup:
• Install Microsoft Managed Apps on your GitHub organization or selected repositories. • Create a Microsoft Managed App and link it to the GitHub repository where your source lives. • Build your application; Microsoft platform builds, previews, and deploys from the commits you select.
