🛠 How updates.dev Works
updates.dev is a GitHub App that automates release management and semantic versioning, seamlessly integrating with your trunk-based workflow. It removes manual steps from versioning, changelog generation, and promotion between release environments (e.g., next, preview, stable).
📦 Core Concepts
• Trunk-based development: updates.dev relies on main as the primary development branch. • Semantic versioning: updates.dev auto-bumps versions based on commit types. • Multi-channel release: Supports alpha, beta, rc, etc. • Promotion flow: Commits are promoted through defined channels with checks and approvals.
⚙️ Setup Requirements
To get started:
• Use trunk-based development (e.g., one main branch). • Follow Semantic Versioning. • Add a .github/poe/config.yaml file. • Install the updates.dev GitHub App.
🔢 Versioning Logic
updates.dev auto-increments versions based on context:
Action Trigger Result
Push to trunk (last release is pre-release) ➕ Build version
Push to trunk (last is stable) ➕ Minor version, 🔁 Patch reset
Push to maintenance branch ➕ Patch version
BREAKING CHANGE: in commit ➕ Major version
🚀 Promotion Logic
Each release can move through channels in .github/poe/config.yaml (e.g., next → preview → stable) if:
• ✅ All workflows pass (if enabled) • 🧑 Manual approvals are received
Each promotion can create a GitHub Release with:
• 📝 Release notes • 🔗 Jira tickets, GitHub issues, PRs • 📦 Binaries, documentation
🌱 Maintenance Branches
After a release to stable, updates.dev creates a branch:
release/{major}.{minor}
Used for patch-only updates and bugfixes (e.g., release/1.2).
