About auto-package-badges
A application that automatically:
• Automatic Detection: Scans repositories for npm, PyPI, TestPyPI, crates.io, Maven/Gradle, Go, and R/CRAN package manifests • Live Badges: Adds Shields.io-powered version, download, license, and registry-link badges • Zero Config: Works automatically after installation — no configuration files needed • Safe Editing: Uses HTML comment markers to preserve manual README edits
How to Use
Automatic Mode (App)
Once installed, the app works automatically:
• On push to main/master: Scans the repository for package manifests and updates badges • On app installation: Scans all selected repositories immediately • On repository addition: Scans newly added repositories
No manual intervention need!
Manual Mode (Adding Markers)
To control where badges appear in your README, add these markers:
<!-- AUTO-PACKAGE-BADGES:START --> <!-- AUTO-PACKAGE-BADGES:END -->Place them where you want the badge section. If no markers exist, the app inserts them after the first heading.
Disabling Auto-Updates
Remove both markers from your README.md to stop automatic badge updates:
<!-- Delete these lines to disable auto-badges --> <!-- AUTO-PACKAGE-BADGES:START -->...badge content...
<!-- AUTO-PACKAGE-BADGES:END -->Badge Marker System
How Markers Work
The app uses invisible HTML comments as markers to identify the badge section:
<!-- AUTO-PACKAGE-BADGES:START -->...badge content (managed by the app)...
<!-- AUTO-PACKAGE-BADGES:END -->Supported Ecosystems
npm (Node.js)
Special features:
• Detects scoped packages (@scope/name) • Scans monorepo directories (packages/, libs/, apps/) • Skips private packages automatically
PyPI (Python)
• Supports PEP 621, Poetry, and legacy setup formats • Detects TestPyPI configuration automatically
crates.io (Rust)
Used for Rust crates detected from Cargo.toml files, including Cargo workspace packages that publish to crates.io.
Go Modules
Note: Go doesn't have a central package registry, so version badges use GitHub tags.
Maven Central (Java)
Used for packages detected from Maven pom.xml files and Gradle projects that publish Maven Central artifacts.
CRAN / Bioconductor (R)
Special features:
• Auto-detects Bioconductor vs CRAN packages • Extracts R version requirements
